Grade 304 stainless steel is popularly used due to its versatility. While there are various grades within the 304 range, the main difference lies in their carbon content. At Tejdeep Steels, we specialize in producing sheets or plates crafted from 304L grade, known for its exceptionally low carbon content—just 0.03%. This minimal carbon presence slightly alters their performance, significantly reducing or altogether preventing the carbide precipitation that typically occurs during the welding process. As a result, 304L stainless steel is excellently suited for use in both welded constructions and highly corrosive environments, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing of joints.

This type of austenitic stainless steel is part of the T-300 series and is characterized by its ease of fabrication, superb corrosion resistance, and impressive formability. These qualities make it a preferred choice for both commercial and domestic applications. Common uses for UNS S30403 stainless steel include food processing equipment, construction materials, heat exchangers, nuts, bolts, and architectural moldings. Its ability to avoid post-weld annealing makes it particularly effective for use in thicker gauge components.

The stainless steel 304L sheets and plates share properties akin to those outlined in ASTM A240/A240M standards. They offer excellent resistance to corrosion, which makes them suitable for use in environments where they are exposed to corrosive media and are effective at resisting cracking at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius. Additionally, SS 304L sheets are resistant to water containing chlorides up to 200 mg/L at temperatures as high as 60 degrees Celsius. While the UNS S30403 is capable of resisting oxidation in both continuous service up to 925 degrees Celsius and intermittent service up to 870 degrees Celsius, it is generally not recommended for use between 425-860 degrees Celsius.

Heat Treatment The solution treatment for this steel grade involves heating it between 1010°C and 1120°C, followed by a rapid cooling process. This enhances the metal’s structural integrity and prepares it for further use.
