Manufacturing Process
Grade 202 stainless steel produces long, sticky chips during machining but can also be machined in its hardened state. For heat treatment, the material should be heated to 1038°C (1900°F) for 30 minutes and then cooled below 16°C (60°F) to achieve full martensite transformation. It can be welded using standard fusion and resistance methods, but oxyacetylene welding is not suitable. The recommended filler metal is AWS E/ER630. Forging should be done after heating the material for one hour at 1177°C (2150°F). However, forging below 1010°C (1850°F) is not recommended.
Fabrication and Heat Treatment
Forming
Grade 201 stainless steel can be shaped using common forming methods and pressure, similar to 300-series stainless steels.
Welding
Grade 201 stainless steel is compatible with all standard welding techniques.
Hot Working
Hot working of Grade 201 stainless steel is done at temperatures between 1149°C and 1232°C (2100°F to 2250°F).
Annealing
Annealing Grade 201 stainless steel is performed at 1010°C to 1093°C (1850°F to 2000°F). Temperatures above 2000°F should be avoided to prevent scaling. Quick cooling is essential to stop carbide crystallization.
