ASTM A105, also known as ASME SA 105, is a standard for seamless, forged carbon steel pipe fittings. These A105 fittings are commonly used in pressure systems for both normal and high-temperature applications. While they can handle high temperatures, it’s important to note that prolonged exposure to temperatures above 425°C can lead to graphitization, where the steel’s carbide phase turns into graphite. Because of this, low-carbon materials like ASTM A105 fittings are not recommended for continuous use at temperatures above this limit.
A105 forged steel fittings can be customized to meet specific customer requirements, including dimensions. They are also available in standard sizes according to industry standards like MSS, ASME, and API. These fittings are designed to handle up to 10,000 lbs of pressure.

Heat treatment is not always required for ASTM A105 fittings. However, an exception exists for certain flanges with a pressure rating above Class 300. These special flanges require heat treatment when the design pressure or temperature is unknown, or when the item is larger than 4 inches NPS and above Class 300. Heat treatment is necessary if normalizing, annealing, normalizing and tempering, or normalizing and quenching with tempering are to be applied.
For A105 socket weld fittings, the alloy is forged at temperatures between 1,700°F and 2,200°F, followed by quenching and tempering. After forging, the parts, like A105 pipe fittings, are cooled below 1,000°F before being reheated. The reheating process occurs at temperatures between 1,550°F and 1,700°F. After reheating, the fittings are slowly cooled in a furnace.
